Selangor Sultan questions state invite to Anwar for N-Day celeb!

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — The Sultan of Selangor has questioned the state’s decision to invite Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to grace an official National Day celebration last week, a Malay daily reported today as controversy grows over the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government’s treatment of the palace.

“His Royal Highness the Sultan finds it strange that in such a programme, Anwar, who is not part of the state government’s top leadership, was the guest-of-honour.

“The PKR Opposition Leader also does not hold any official portfolio, except as the appointed State Economic Adviser,” Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, who is private secretary to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, was reported by Sinar Harian as saying.

“The convention is that if His Royal Highness is unable to attend the state government’s official programmes, the Mentri Besar replaces the Sultan to give speeches and so on. But, why was Anwar invited and gave a speech, when this was an official programme, not a political programme?” the palace official told the Malay daily.

Mohamad was previously reported as saying that the Selangor Sultan was not invited or informed of the state-level celebrations.

“Maybe the people will wonder why in an official programme, the Sultan did not appear, but Anwar became the guest of honor and came forward to speak,” he was quoted as saying.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had yesterday castigated the PR-led Selangor government for shutting out the state Ruler from its official National Day celebrations at Dataran Shah Alam last Thursday, suggesting that it placed greater importance on Anwar (picture)  who was only an economic adviser than the monarch.

“The question of disrespecting the Selangor Sultan does not surprise us… they show more respect to their economic adviser who has no locus standi,” he told reporters at the Selangor Umno Adilfitri celebration in Sungai Buloh yesterday as he scoffed at his political nemesis’ specially-created position within the state government.

“His Royal Highness is the symbol to the state that we must respect,” he said, adding that the Selangor Sultan was a symbol of the state’s sovereignty and unity and should be accorded the highest level of respect.

Najib, who is also Umno president, had warned that there the PKR-DAP-PAS opposition bloc would change many things, including the royal institution should it succeed in taking power at the next general elections due soon.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has deflected criticism saying the state countdown to the country’s 55th Independence Day last Thursday at Dataran Shah Alam was not politically-motivated.

“This celebration has never been a politically-motivated celebration and has been carried out by government officials from the state secretariat office for several years,” Khalid, who is also the PKR treasurer, was quoted as saying in today’s New Sunday Times.

Khalid reportedly said that the state had complied with the usual practices in organising such an event.

The weekend edition of the Umno-linked English daily also reported Khalid saying that State Secretary Datuk Mohamad Khusrin Munawi would explain the circumstances in a report.

    • PR should apologise for the disrespect to Sultan. How can they invite Anwar as the guest of honor but did not invite Sultan who is the ruler of the state!!

      • PR invite Anwar for their state celebration, can one image if PR takes over the country and Anwar is the PM.

PR MAY FORGO MERDEKA DAY AND CELEBRATE ANWAR’S BIRTHDAY INSTEAD.

      • PR showed us how arrogant are they… to them, they are above all laws and protocols..

    • Best of umno,
Alamak! Very wrong for u to say Chinese are pendatang! We the X generation vote candidate who are good regardless of party. U better improve or else u won’t get our votes whether u are from umno, pkr or pas!

That’s ok to me but why u feel ok with comments posted by best of umno? Are u not Chinese or u are really a pendatang!

  2. Kesian kat kaki MCA, mati mati sokong UMNO supaya terus berkuasa tapi dia pe tak layan lagi menanda MCA sebagai PENDATANG dan ANJING…. Habis la MCA cina tak sokong, umno pun tak lak sokong….Kesian…Saya nasihat MCA pi balik China la….

    • Jangan berbohong lagi, PR.

      • As usual, they are diverting the topic to something else. Their hope is that we all get angry on something else but not on them.

IT IS SO TYPICAL OF PR TACTICS. THAT’S THE WAY THEY HAVE BEEN USING TO SQUIRMS AWAY FROM ALL THEIR WRONG DOINGS.

SO MY QUESTION TO PROS, IS YOUR DEFACTO LEADER HAVE A HIGHER STATURE THAN THE SELANGOR SULTAN?

OR ARE WE GOING TO CELEBRATE YOUR DEFACTO LEADER BIRTHDAY WHEN YOU PR COME INTO POWER?

      • hahaha, it is no joke, PR may change the N-day to 308 or the election date if they really come into power!! And of course, Anwar’s b-date is public holidays!!

    • Actually I m also not so ok with MCA but I cannot accept Hudud! How can DAP support that! The PAS is also guilty of taking Chinese as pendatang so they don’t bother about objection from Chinese and Indians!

      • Dear X,
My beef with DAP Is that THEY SOLD THEIR SOULS for a ticket to putrajaya.
They are willing to ACCEPT PAS and their EXTREME HUDUD interpretation for their own SELFISH GREED AND POWER.

DAP DID NOT DO ANYTHING FOR YOU….
        .THEY DO EVERTHING FOR THEMSELVES!

THEY DON’T CARE IF MALAYSIA BECOMES EXTREME ISLAMIC STATE SO LONG THEY ARE SEATED IN PUTRAJAYA ENJOYING THEIR NEW FOUND STATURE AND WEALTH.

  3. PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was displeased with the presence of Parti Keadilan Rakyat chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka eve celebrations held by the state government last Thursday.

The sultan’s private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani said the sultan had in fact, questioned why Anwar was invited to the ceremony, even to the extent of being accorded a speaking slot at the event.

“On what basis and capacity was Anwar invited? He has no ties with Selangor; his only claim is having won a seat in Penang.

“The Sultan is displeased by this turn of events. The Sultan is wondering as to why Anwar was invited and given a slot to speak,” he told Malaysian Digest in a brief phone interview.

Mohamad Munir was earlier quoted by online portal Free Malaysia Today as saying that the sultan need not declare his intention on whether he intended to attend the Merdeka celebration as his position was above the state administration.

“The sultan is above the state government. He would not declare that he intends to attend if he wasn’t invited,” he said.

In a statement yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar political secretary Faekah Husin said it was the practice for Mohamad Munir to inform the state secretary Datuk Mohamad Khusrin Munawi if the sultan wished to attend the ceremony.

Faekah had claimed that confusion arose when Mohamad Munir did not provide sufficient information to Mohamad Khusrin.

“If the Sultan had the intention to grace the event, this should have been communicated to Khusrin by Munir Bani, but this never happened,” said Faekah.

Mohamad Munir, however, disputed the claim.

“The palace will usually be informed about such programmes by the state government and I will refer to the Sultan on whether he would be attending.

“The Sultan would inform me that he was available, and I would in turn relay the message to the state government official to confirm his attendance. However, this year we were not informed about the matter.

“How then would we know if the Sultan would like to attend or otherwise?” he said.

The online portal had also spoken to former Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, who also questioned Anwar’s presence at the event.

“Who invited him? Why invite him? This is the problem. The MB’s office instructs the state government to invite Anwar. There has never been a programme where there are two main guests. It is the responsibility of the state government under Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to invite the sultan,” he said.

He also claimed the invitation of the main guest should be handled by the Menteri Besar. As such, it was irresponsible of Abdul Khalid to place the blame on the state secretary.

“The main guest is under the MB’s purview while others are handled by the state secretary. The MB, by rights, should not give any excuses and blame Mohamad Khusrin when he is the one who should be explaining why Anwar was invited,” he said.

Mohamad Khir said the Merdeka Day celebration escalated into a political party programme even though the expenditure was the state government’s. He claimed it should not have happened and claimed that it only received a poor turnout of around 7,000.

“The issue of Merdeka should not be a party programme. Inviting Anwar and giving him an opportunity to speak; they should instead have an event under the party and use party funds,” he said.

Controversy broke out when claims emerged that the sultan was not invited to attend the state-level 55th Merdeka Day celebration which was held at the Dataran Kemerdekaan, Shah Alam last Thursday.

Anwar instead was invited as the guest of honour and he gave a speech at the event, which carried the theme “Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa: Terima Kasih Rakyat, Selangorku Terus Maju” (One Race, One Country, One Soul: Thank You To The People, My Selangor Continues To Prosper).

The theme is a breakaway from the national level Merdeka Day theme, which was 55 Years of Merdeka; Promises Fulfilled.

    >>>>>>Everytime they made mistakes, they like to blame others for their mistakes!! Not the first time and definitely won’t be the last time! Accountability???

    • I wonder if Anwar requested to attend the celebration, caused the state government would not know anwar’s intention unless he requested it.

      THAT’S THEIR LOGIC AND DEFENCE.
THEY ASSUME WE ARE ALL STUPID AND BRAINLESS.

  5. Mohamad Khir said the Merdeka Day celebration escalated into a political party programme even though the expenditure was the state government’s. —– Is this misuse of state money for their political party??? MACC should do something to prevent this to happen!!

    • Yes, please investigate the state government. They instruct all departments to attend the celebration, paid the celebration with state funds but it’s a PARKATAN’s ROADSHOW.

THEY ARE ABUSING STATE FUNDS AND RESOURCES FOR THEIR OWN POLITICAL SHOW.

      • It is totally wrong to use state funds for their political agenda. How much more money they have use state funds to run their political events???

  6. walau!! PR cannot be trusted anymore, this is obvious, they misused state funds to organize party events. Anwar got nothing to do with Selangor!!

    • These are only SOME of the stuffs uncovered with their constant AVOIDANCE to show their minutes and documents. Worse still is that PRs CONSTANTLY CLAMP DOWN on any exposés by imposing GAGs on anyone who may want to expose their faults.

SO WHAT TRANSPARENCY ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT.
THERE ARE NO TRANSPARENCY PRACTISED BY PR.
PR DON’T PRATICE WHAT THEY PREACH.

  7. Yes, a reliable source told me that, in order for the UMNO to respect the exist of MCA and GERAKAN, they have to win at least 50 parliment seats above. If the UMNO continue rule the country but the Chinese candidate left less than 10, then there will be the end of MCA n GRK. Come MCA, try your very best to win back the heart of chinese …..or else,, how?

  8. I think DAP will be replacing MCA and Gerakan after next GE. DAP can work with anyone, they did not like Anwar and PAS last time, but they can work together for power, so it is not surprised if DAP work with UMNO. Provided MCA and Gerakan are minority in BN, DAP will win the chinese vote with their ways.

    • If DAP works with Umno shai is the difference from MCA? But then again it is better than with PAS cos I dont want to go cinema or restaurant sitting at different sections from my girlfriends!

  9. After Teoh case, MACC is very scared of PR, no actions at all even though there is misuse of state funds for N-day and Talam bail out!

  10. Can you believe him! He is practically saying the PR can invite whom ever they chooses or like. They can invite CHINESE CHICKEN rice seller if wanted to.
NO NEED TO FOLLOW PROTOCOL, for they are the chosen ones.

      • DEAR PROS,

WHAT ARE YOU “BULL” TALKING ABOUT THAT “MCA WHO ARE ALWAYS INSULTING CHINESE”. This is about PR who think JUST BECAUSE they were elected, THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY LIKE!

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CHINESE……
EXCEPT FOR THE CHINESE CHICKEN GUY!

      • MCA gang,

Everyone can insult anyone and it should feel the same! What is your point? Even though I can understand why van Persie left arsenal but I don’t understand u!
